GS-441524 is the primary metabolite of the antiviral prodrug remdesivir, with a half-life of around 24 hours in humans. It was established to be effective against the feline coronavirus strains responsible for feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a potentially lethal systemic disease in cats.
FIP occurs when a cat has an immune defect or deficiency that causes the white blood cells to copy, as opposed to fight, the virus. In cats with no immune response, the virus multiplies and this leads to wet FIP. If there is a partial immune response, dry FIP may occur.
The active nucleoside analog GS-441524 is a precursor molecule which interjects itself in the chain reaction and halts the replication of the virus. This halts the spread of the virus and allows the cat to build up an immune response. GS-441524 has been proven to have a positive effect on the immune system of cats, and combined with other therapeutic strategies can help the cat’s body fight off the virus.
